EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
