Pentagon Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
